Adobe, Cob and Bamboo

The work in Janakpur had stalled for various political reasons, one being kidnapping of our overseer. Well! That all seem pretty normal these days. Anyways, the villagers put all their effort to resume the work. It just heartbreaking to see, how much love and effort people have put into this project. We not only see work in Harsar as our seminal work because we have an opportunity to try out different construction methodologies like rammed earth, stablized earth blocks, adobe and cob but the social aspect of working with the community has just priceless.

This is a section of a wall with a high stone plinth and foundation, two layers of burnt bricks, adobe wall for thermal mass vertical and horizonatal bamboo reinforcement against earthquake which are all topped off with cob wall for a better adobe and bamboo connection.

Village Of the Future

We are working with a community in Chitwan where we are planting hundreds of bamboo along a river bed. In order to avoid monoculture, we are also planting high value crops like lemongrass, ginger, lentil, chamomile etc. Our plan is to add value to these plants, for example by building schools with local resources, or extracting lemongrass oil so that we can create a unique village that demonstrates the world the best local use of natural resources. Treatment

Treatment is the most fundamental part of bamboo construction. We spent first two years of Abari just developing pressure treatment system that is effective, portable and economical- in other words that is suitable in a developing country like ours. It is not fully perfected, but it is good enough to treat 100 bamboo a day. We have even exported our technology to India, Fiji and USA! Furniture

We have silently doing some prototyping for furniture, lampshades using bamboo and other materials like metals, leather, glass etc. If you like to collaborate please do let us know.
